JONNIE KING: 1380 KGLD/ST. LOUIS

WHILE I WAS AT KADI-FM doing the Mid-Day show in October, 1985, I got a call from my old friend GARY "RECORDS" BROWN.  Gary was doing Morning Drive at a new oldies station in town 1380/KGLD, and told me that there was an opening for Afternoon Drive there, and that he had mentioned me to the Program Director, GARY MITCHELL   He told me to give Gary a call if I was interested and set-up an interview for the job.

Well, anyone who's known me for more than five minutes will tell you I'm the Ultimate Oldies Guru...love 'em, have studied 'em for years, and, have played many of 'em when they were new !   So, that afternoon I did call Gary Mitchell,  made plans to visit with him and, shortly after that, left KADI to join KGLD.   It was one of the happiest year's of my professional life, and Gary Mitchell was just great to work with !

KGLD WAS A PART OF ROBINSON BROADCASTING, and its sister station was KWK-FM/106.5 which was a rocker.   It had previously been KWK-AM/13.8, and on June 1st, 1984 changed the call letters and became KGLD... a solid Oldies station.

To say I was excited about being on-board there would be putting it mildly !  "Oldies" are an integral part of my nature.  Some of the best lyrics, melodies, sounds, and, rhythm patterns have come down through the years, as well as some of the most enduring artists.  Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, The Five Satins, The Penquins, The Coasters, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, The Dells, Bobby Vee,  Lavern Baker, Ruth Brown, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Four Tops, Carl Perkins, The Spaniels,  The Platters, oh, and don't forget ELVIS,  and many, many more have all contributed to our musical heritage for decades.   And, nobody loves playing 'em on-the-radio more than me.

In addition, since KGLD was a relatively new "oldies" station, their library was a little thin...and, that's where I came in:  I brought lots of my personal collection with me to both play on my show, and then leave them at the station so that they could be recorded and added to the library.

So, as I mentioned earlier, the year that I spent at KGLD (October, 1985-October, 1986) was just SUPER !  And, since the station was missing many songs that were great and needed to be heard, during the course of my afternoon shift I sometimes ended up playing about 25-30% of the records out of my own collection which worked out fine. (And, yes, in those days we still had turntables to use for playing many of the songs that weren't yet recorded ! )

In fact, the ratings,  and everything else that went on during the entire year that I worked there went SO well that the Program Director, Gary Mitchell, only called me one time on the Hot Line...and all he called for was to find out how to get to a party/event that the Sales Department was having !

ABOUT THIS AIRCHECK:  The Aircheck that you're listening to is from Friday, April 4th, 1986, and, Saturday, April 5th, 1986.  That weekend we were running a "Rock Around The Clock" Weekend that was in conjunction with the Daylight Savings Time change-over when the clocks would be moved forward.

The quality on this Aircheck is not up to my standards due to the recording devices we had in 1986.  HOWEVER, until sometime in 2010 I thought this tape was lost !   Then by a twist of fate, I unearthed it one night while going through a box containing some other items !  So here it is, and no matter what the quality it is the only surviving Aircheck that I have from my time at KGLD.

And, by the way, as you can tell from the "sound" of what was going on at the station...it was a LOT OF FUN !!

CHANGES...

IN OCTOBER OF 1986,  RICHARD MILLER, the owner of  KADI-FM/96.3 asked me to return to the fold, and I did.

Staying with  96.3, in all of its incarnations from 1986 to 2001, I logged a total of FIFTEEN consecutive years...one of the longest "single frequency" runs in the History of the St. Louis Market, a record of which I am truly proud.

IRONICALLY, when I left 96.3 after those 15 years, I went to work at WSSM/Smooth Jazz... which was the old KWK-FM frequency: 106.5 !______________________________________________________________________________________

ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS DURING my stay at KGLD was our March 17th, 1986 St. Patrick's Day Party & Remote at Bristol's Bar & Grill.   It was a fantastic day for all concerned, we had a packed house,  met lots of great listeners & friends, and all-in-all it was a major success for both Bristol's AND KGLD !

(These pix are the only one's that I have from KGLD, and, for our St. Patty's Day Remote as you can see, we ended up with very classy Tuxedo's & green bowties !)

IN THE FIRST PIC ABOVE that's Jeff Cochran & myself...along with a strange balloon that had somehow made its way to our Bristol's broadcast table.

PIC #2 Has Jeff & Tom Gordon in the background with one of Bristol's Asst. Mgr's., and the Bristol's Manager & myself at the Mike in front as I was getting ready to Interview her.

PIC #3 Shows the Manager's smiling reaction to one of the questions I asked her during the Interview...and , as you can see, the mysterious balloon had ended up with Jeff.  As I remember, that was the last we saw of Jeff that day as both he and the balloon took flight shortly after this picture was taken !!
